London, Korean Folk and Reggae
Tehiun’s Reggae love started many years back in London. He played in few rock bands, and questioned about himself. He was looking for his unique point from his voice, and found out that he has Korean roots in him. Then he started to listen to Korean Folk and also music from all over the world. He found Reggae has something connected to his roots music. He came back to Korea, and started to play in Reggae bands, as a vocalist and a guitarist.

One-Drop
Also he started to be a singer-songwriter, and tried to make a sound simple and groovy by himself playing. So he started to tap the guitar to make a snare sound, and step on the floor to make a bass drum. So now he plays an nylon guitar and a stompbox to make one-drop reggae sound.

Travels
Travelling gives a good inspiration to his music. He’s been Thailand, India and Nepal in past 6 years, and inspired so much from each travelling. After 90 days in India and Nepal, he finally released the first album “행후감(行後感), Travel Report”.

Nature
His numerous experiences with nature, including so many festivals, inspired his music. he decided to move
from Seoul to Jeju Island, which is an island most south in South Korea. He made his own studio and made 2
albums. The second album “☆히言, Tehiun” is a compilation of his music that he has been working for 10 years period of time. The last album “sunset madang” is about the natural life with a back yard and a sunset view. And both albums are made with a cassette tape.

Tehiun is a singer-songwriter who works primarily with reggae and folk through an acoustic sound. With a deep interest in and respect for traditional music from around the world, he absorbs diverse influences and reshapes them through his own musical language. Deeply rooted in Jamaican roots reggae, his music embraces the warmth of analog sound and messages of peace. He also draws inspiration from the music he encounters while traveling, expressing through song the distinctive emotions and rhythms of speech found in his own roots, Korean traditional music.

This single presents Tehiun’s reinterpretation of “Jilguneak,” a traditional folk song from Jeju Island, Korea. The title is a Jeju dialect variation of “Gilgunak,” referring to a song traditionally sung by groups of people along the road. Rooted in the island’s longstanding musical heritage and communal spirit, the song is reimagined through the sounds of acoustic folk and reggae.

Two distinct versions emerged during the recording process. The first is a stripped-down folk arrangement built around acoustic guitar and the heobeok, a traditional Jeju percussion instrument made from a water jar. The second reinterprets the song through the musical approach of Bonggo Session, Tehiun’s Korean roots reggae project, incorporating a three-beat steppers reggae rhythm. Both versions are set to be released as a 7-inch vinyl single. Through these contrasting arrangements, the release explores both the distinctive character of Jeju folk music and its potential for new musical expression.

As Tehiun delved deeper into Jeju’s traditional songs, he became increasingly inspired by the island’s cultural identity and musical heritage. This interest led him to launch Roots Route, a project dedicated to exploring and connecting the music and cultures of islands around the world. The project seeks to encounter the music, cultural traditions, and stories of people shaped by life on islands, fostering cultural and musical exchange across borders.

“Jilguneak” is both an exploration of new musical possibilities through the meeting of Korean traditional music, reggae, and folk, and one of the starting points for Roots Route—a project that begins in Jeju and seeks to build connections with island cultures and musical traditions around the world.
