TThe combination of percussion (played by Haedong) and bass string instruments (played by Donghee) create a sound similar to the heartbeat of a human being and represents a new space-time that departs from all existing narratives. They were also accompanied by DOSAs(masters who have been cultivating their music for decades). One night, DOKKAEBIes banged the drums and plucked their strings having fun while breathing in the scent of incense. Suddenly DOSAs appeared and shook DOKKAEBIes. Will Dosas be enticed by Dokkaebies, or will Dokkaebies be taken in by Dosas?


CONCEPT.

“Dokkaebi Play“ arose from speculating what early music might have been like. Just as music evolved together with the history of mankind and human rituals, the ritualistic music of the Hae Dong Sungguk album came into its own consciousness. The ritual it expresses might be a rain dance, or a funeral, or a hunting ceremony, or even a tea ceremony. Whatever it expresses doesn’t necessarily matter. The moderators of this ritual are also defined as Dokkaebi (goblins), rather musicians or performers. Goblins change into trees and stones during the day, and when night comes, enjoy dancing and singing together. The figure of the goblin, somewhere between human and godlike simultaneously possesses the contradictory traits of pleasantness, wretchedness, and remarkableness.

 

세네갈, 말리, 기니 등 서아프리카의 여러 부족 내에서 계승되는 음악을 공부하며 정제되지 않은 원형의 음악을 연구해온 해동 의 새 프로젝트 해동성국. Free & Avant-garde jazz, Free improvisation, African music 등을 비롯하여 각종 World music 들로부터 영향을 받은 해동은 자신의 음악을 'Dokkaebi music'이라 칭한다. 소리 그 자체에 대한 고민을 거듭하며 만들어낸 이 프로젝트는 인간의 감정 및 기억과 가장 밀접한 감각인 후각에도 주목하여 트랙 별로 특정한 향이 연주 및 감상에 영향을 미 치도록 하였다.

첫 번째 앨범 [DOKKAEBI PLAY]는 태초의 음악이 어떤 소리였을지 추측해보는 것에서 시작되었고, 음악이 인류의 다양한 의 식(ceremony)의 역사와 함께 발전해왔듯이 여기서 해동성국만의 고유한 의식을 만들어내는 것으로 진행되었다. 이 의식은 기우제일 수도, 장례식일 수도, 사냥 의식일 수도, 차를 마시는 의식일 수도 있다. 그 어떤 의미를 담고 있어도 상관없다. 그리 고 이 의식의 진행자들을 음악가나 퍼포머라기 보다는 '도깨비'로 정의했다. 도깨비는 낮에는 나무나 부지깽이 등으로 변해있다 가 밤이 되면 모여서 춤과 노래를 즐긴다. 유쾌함과 망측함, 비범함을 동시에 갖춘, 인간도 신도 아닌 도깨비의 정체성이 해동 성국이 만들어내는 세계와 닮아있다.

타악기(해동)와 굵은 현 악기(동희)로 인간의 심장박동과 가까운 소리를 만들고, 이에 향(이단)을 피워 기존의 어떤 서사도 갖지 않은 새로운 시공간을 창조해냈다. 여기에 각자의 음악 분야에서 오래도록 도를 닦아온 도사들이 함께했다. 도깨비들이 신나게 북을 치고 줄을 튕기고 향불을 피우며 놀던 어느 밤, 갑자기 도사들이 등장하여 도깨비판을 뒤흔들어놓는 다. 도사들은 도깨비들의 꾀에 당할 것인가, 도깨비들이 도사들의 도에 넘어갈 것인가.  .
